What’s the deal with the name?
Emo-Fi is a combination of Emoji and Wifi. It was born out of the playful idea to use a wifi network’s emoji name as the menubar wifi icon instead of the boring system icon.
Fun? Yes! Useful? Perhaps less so 🙃
OK. So can I actually use it to connect to wifi networks?
Absolutely! You can connect both to the networks in the list, or to hidden networks, via the eye icon at the bottom left of the menu.
I just tried that, but it asks me for an administrator username and password. Something about a “System” keychain?
Unfortunately, due to MacOS’s security mechanism, apps aren’t allowed to automatically read all your system passwords. This is a very good thing. However it means that to connect to a known wifi network, Emo-Fi needs to request access to the system password for that network.
I understand. But won’t this become a bit tedious when changing networks?
We understand this concern. For this reason we created an option for Emo-Fi to independently store the wifi password for networks you connect to (known or new) in its own secure keychain. This will make switching networks much more seamless.
You can enable this ability in the app settings.
Got it. But what if I want to clear them?
You can also easily do this in the app settings 🙂
I noticed sometimes when I try to manually connect to hidden networks, it fails even though I’m sure the details are correct. What gives?
There appears to be a bug in the MacOS wifi interface which causes this. Unfortunately there’s not much Emo-Fi can do about this. However, please try connecting a few times, and it should eventually work. Sorry 😢
What is the difference between the free version and the pro version?
Emo-Fi Pro adds:
- The ability to theme the menu and
- Internet connectivity strength indicator
Aside from this, all functionality is available in the free version ✌️

Privacy
Your privacy is very important to us at Black Sapote and we take it very seriously.
Emo-Fi does not collect or transmit any data. Any wifi passwords you choose to store in the app are stored securely in the Keychain on your device or iCloud (if you have enabled iCloud Keychain).
Note, that MacOS automatically stores passwords to wifi networks that you connect to via Emo-Fi. This is unfortunately beyond our control.
